Day 11 - 10/12/22 - At Sea to Samoa - Day 1

There's nothing quite being awakened from a deep sleep at 4:25am by the PA announcement tones and the Captain's voice saying, "Please pardon this early interruption.  We have an emergency medical helicopter evacuation of a guest by a US Coast Guard helicopter in progress. Please stay clear of the outside decks.  We had to return to Hawaii to be in range of the helicopter." I checked our position and track and computed we turned around about midnight.  I further determined it was dark out so I maintained a prone position but notified family members and our pastor that we were okay.  He was tracking us and would see that we turned around.

After breakfast we attended the 9am coffee chat with Racheal and Jenna, HR representative.  It was interesting and we learned that the crew is free to come to guest events in civilian clothes and that they have some specific areas above the waterline they can visit and recreate in.  There's also a a section of the Lido where they can eat.  She also indicated that no longer are jobs restricted to specific nationalities like Indonesians typically are stateroom attendants and Philippinos are bartenders.

Racheal then presented a nice overview of Captain Cook's life and legacy.  She said a lecturer would be joining us and has two lectures on Captain Cook. I then attended the Future Cruise presentation and once again my appetite for an interesting cruise was presented.  But disclosure of that cruise will have to wait.  It'll be the first cruise of this type that we've ever taken.

We once again had lunch with our friends in the Lido Pool area.  Afterwards we watched the movie Aloha on the Main Stage.  We'd seen it before but it was fun to see the Hawaii scenes after being there so recently.  I also participated solo in the ABBA music trivia contest which was a lot of fun as I enjoy their music.

We enjoyed our Lido dinner of lamb chops, green beans, mashed potatoes, and filet mignon.  The evening's entertainment was Janice Martin, who was an excellent instrumentalist on the violin, piano, and guitar.  Additionally, she had an operatic quality voice.

The Billboard Onboard attracted us for a couple of sets and we wrapped up the evening watching a set in BBKing.  It was quite good and pretty well attended.  We were also able to reconnect with the show host who we gave an Uber ride to a few days earlier.

And so ended our first sea day on our way to Samoa.

  1. Did you research available future cruises before your cruise or was there a presentation of a cruise that you just couldn't resist booking? What is the perk for booking a cruise while ON a cruise.
